Evening
On the Farm
Round bales of hay sit
wrapped in white plastic
like giant marshmallows
toasting in the setting sun.
A good day's work finished,
the farmer wipes his brow
as he sets upon the porch,
his mouth turned up in a grin
of tired satisfaction.
Beside him, his wife
is listening to
the youngsters laughing
and splashing in the creek
behind the farm house,
happy for the cool refreshment
after a hot day.
The cows have left the barn
not long ago
with empty udders,
to begin their evening grazing,
contented.
The young farmhand
seeks a few moments alone,
and he stretches out on a hillside
chewing on a blade of grass,
gazing up at mother-of-pearl cloud puffs
imagining their shapes to be
a ship that will carry him far from home
or eagle wings, strong and carefree.
Frogs and crickets
tune their instruments
to begin their symphony
of the summer night.
The stars will be
their stage lights
and the residents
of the sleepy farm
their appreciative audience.
