  THE FINAL MILE

As I travel my final mile
   --a long dark tunnel--
 I can see the sunlight
 right past here!

 No doubting at all
I have tried hard in this life,
but maybe just not hard enough.
 If I have taken you
 into the darkness with me,
 for that I am sorry.

 I am afraid.
 I am so alone
 my insides are quivering,
 but I will win!

 I have fallen down hard,
but if I could come back
 now they would see!
 I would show them
 I can overcome!
 I would show them
 I can handle it!

You ask to walk beside me,
but this must be done my way
 and very alone.
 I either win this time
 or begin again.
 And each time
I give all I have to give,
 until I am naked--
my depth exposed for all to see.

No one has the right to judge me
For they do not see what I see.
I cry these thoughts to myself
as I know my sands are tumbling
and I have much yet to achieve.

 When I leave the world
I want to leave it something
 to remember...
     more than possessions...

 There will be the memories
 of friends like you
 when I am gone,
so maybe others will know of
 the caring ways I had.

 My friend,
 because you promise
 you will never forget me--
I know my love of this life
 will live on forever,
and for that I thank you.
