  HOUSEWIFE

She stands behind the vacuum cleaner
pushing it to pick up the dirt
to make a good appearance
for the company
she does not really wish
to entertain.

Her husband brings them home:
The "business associates" and "clients",
so he calls them.
Almost always female
except for the occasional token male
for the sake of appearances,
she is sure.
 
She dresses well
and sets the table
and prepares the meal
that will impress his friends.
She serves coffee and dessert with a smile.
 
When the dishes are washed,
she smiles at her children's test scores
and reads them a bed time story
like a good mother should.
Their teeth are brushed
and their laundry clean to wear
the next day
 
She lays beside the man in her bed.
They share a passion she cannot deny,
and she allows him to hold her
to satisfy the animal inside her
 
Yesterday there was love
She can almost remember.
Tomorrow will be the same as today.
