Ballad of the Minstrel and His Lady

Two hearts caught up in the music
but not united
      He on stage
         Spilling his heart
      She in the crowd
         Calling out praises
which fell unheard at his feet.

Once they had loved
So strong that she believed
   it was for life,
But his music meant more
   and she became
      no more than a part
      of his wardrobe
      --expected to be around always
like his favorite pair of jeans.

But even old denims

   someday go to rags
And one day
as he took his final bow
tears began to streak her face
for she knew there was no encore
Before the curtain went up that day
He had told her their music had died
--that his heart no longer sang for her
   --that perhaps he'd been mistaken
        to believe it ever had.

She would never forget him
     his lyrics beyond poetry
     his music beyond melody
        the guitar strings dancing
           beneath his touch
The radio assaulted her heart
Every song
--even those they had not shared--
   was a memory
A vision as well as a sound
         --His face
           more vivid
           than a photograph
           in her mind
              And even time
      did not fade it.

Sometimes she wondered
if she could go on in life
But she managed...
In time there was new love,
truer love than she'd ever imagined
the kind that even death does not kill.

Then one day he returned
Put to shame and broken
   by the very same game
   he had played with her
Knowing he had been wrong
He told her his heart had always sung for her
          and that it always would.

Her love for him had not died
But her new love
   could be broken by nothing
This she told him
with tears in her eyes
and he knew there was no choice
      He turned and left
before she saw the tears in his.

And they both knew
Their song would play forever
             in their hearts
Though their souls
      were never meant
         to live in harmony.
